Korean Bank Account for International Students: 2026 Complete Guide
pdt · 2026. 2. 27.

Every February and March, when the new semester kicks off at Korean universities, international students face the same first hurdle: opening a bank account.
From paying your dormitory deposit and first month's rent to charging your transit card and ordering food delivery — almost everything in Korea runs through a real-name verified local account. Without one, you'll hit a wall on day one of orientation.
This guide covers everything a newly arrived international student needs to know about opening a Korean bank account in 2026 — no fluff, just what you actually need.

Korean Bank Account for Foreigners: When Should You Open It?
As early as possible — ideally within your first week
Foreigners staying in Korea for more than 90 days are required to apply for an ARC (Alien Registration Card) at the nearest immigration office within 90 days of arrival. It typically takes 2–3 weeks to arrive. In the meantime, you can open an account, but without an ARC you'll only get a restricted account with low daily transfer limits.During the spring semester rush, bank branches near university campuses get busy fast — aim for a weekday morning visit. The smartest move: handle your ARC application and your bank visit on the same day.
📅 Spring Semester Checklist (Feb–Mar arrivals)
Week 1
: Immigration office → Apply for ARC / Telecom shop → Get a Korean SIM

Korean Bank Account for Foreigners: Documents You Need in 2026
With ARC vs. Without ARC
1. If you have an ARCWith a valid ARC, most major banks can open a full account for you on the same day. As of 2026, over 10 banks — including KB Kookmin, Shinhan, KEB Hana, and Woori — now accept the Mobile ARC in place of the physical card.

Holders of D-2 (student) and D-4-1 (language study) visas can usually open a restricted account using just a passport + enrollment certificate. Once your ARC arrives, return to the branch to unlock full transfer limits and activate mobile banking.

🔍 Bank Account Opening Tips
• Branches near major universities (Hongdae, Sinchon, Anam-dong, etc.) often have dedicated foreign customer desks or English-speaking staff, making it easier for foreigners to open a Korean bank account.
• Shinhan and KB Kookmin run spring semester student packages — in some cases, your enrollment certificate alone is enough to start the Korean bank account opening process. Check both banks before you visit.

3 Things to Do After Opening a Korean Bank Account
Don't leave the branch without completing these
Once your account is open, these three steps need to happen on the spot — skipping them now means making an extra trip back to the branch later.① Install the mobile banking app + register OTP
Ask the teller to walk you through it. Install your bank's official app (KB Star Banking, Shinhan SOL, etc.) and set up your OTP (one-time password) while you're still at the counter.
OTP is required for large transfers and overseas wire transfers — without it, you won't be able to use those features when you actually need them.
② Enable international use on your debit card
When picking up your card, confirm that international use is enabled.
Without a specific request, some banks issue an ATM-only card by default. You'll need the international debit function for overseas platform payments or to use your Korean card after returning home.
③ Register your overseas transfer bank
If you plan to send money back home, request 'foreign exchange bank designation' at the counter when you open your account. Without this step, international wire transfers are blocked entirely.
Look into transfer fee discount products at each bank to reduce the cost of regular remittances.

One thing to remember: go to the bank the same day you apply for your ARC. One trip, two things done.
